From an essay by Wang Pi (226–249) about the I Ching:

From an essay by Wang Pi (226–249) about the I Ching:

The words are that which clarify the images; obtaining the images, one forgets the words.
The images are that which maintain the meaning; obtaining the meaning, one forgets the image.
Similarly, a trail is how you catch a hare. Once you have the hare, you forget the trail.
Traps are how you catch a fish. Once you have the fish, you forget the trap.
In this way, then, words are the trail of images, and images are the traps of meaning.

Because of this, one who stores up the words is not one who obtains the images.
One who stores up the images is not one who obtains the meaning.
The images are born from the meaning, which is stored in the images.
Thus what is stored is surely not the images.
The words are born from the images, which are stored in the words.
Ths what is stored is surely not the words.

My teacher Lissa sent me this essay. I think words and images are like good friends.
They dance together. Some times, one just listen or speak louder than each other.
